Is Kuldhara Village Haunted?

Kuldhara Village is an abandoned village in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. I take the dusty road while going to Dunes from Jaisalmer about 20 kilometres from the Dunes lies Kuldhara. My driver narrate to me the story behind abandoned and cursed of Kuldhara. It was abandoned by the early 19th century for unknown reasons, some says its due to less water supply, some says its cursed by Paliwal Brahmins when they left the town because of the Diwan of Jaisalmer Salim Singh during that time as he’s known for his bad habits and unfair way of tax-collecting methods. Salim Singh set his eye on the beautiful daughter of village chief and threaten the villagers if they came in his way he would levy huge taxes on them.

Fearing the words of Diwan, the residents of the entire village left the village in one dark night, leaving behind their homes and everything within them. For generations now, no one knows where the Paliwals have resettled. All that they know is they cursed the town by saying – that no one would ever be settle down in Kuldhara again.

The houses are almost in the same condition as they were left behind by their inhabitants. One can easily see the entire view of the village. There are approx 410 buildings can be seen in village. This village is considered to be the most haunted place, and it is also claimed that spending night in this place is impossible. As the sun set in Dunes the gate are closed by the locals of the neighboring villages.

Due to these claims, many people try to break the ravel of the mystery that revolves around the village. It is been said that some people of the paranormal society have spent night in Kuldhara and experience the paranormal activities. They said – it is the best ghost village in India.

After hearing the story a sudden chill sweeps over me. Is it because of the place or the cool evening breeze of the desert? I’m not sure. But the story of Kuldhara definitely leaves me with goosebumps.

Kuldhara today is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India as a heritage site.

Best time to visit Kuldhara : Winters (October – February) from Sun Rise to Sun Set. Summers are very hot in Rajasthan.
